Latest Updates
- Thank you to ALL the donors, sponsors, volunteers, players, families and friends who participated in the Silent Auction and Hockey Tournament. We had a great turnout for all the events. We’re now in the process of tallying the contributions received through last weekend.
- We will be keeping the web site open for some time, and we continue to welcome donations. All amounts contributed even after the Tournament Weekend will go to the families as described below. Thank you for continuing to help.
The Story
Two players have died and one is in critical condition after contracting meningitis during an adult ice hockey game in Fort Collins on June 9. All three players were playing in the same game. Brian Worums, age 29, was the first to fall ill. He went to the hospital on Sunday after experiencing flu-like symptoms and died the next day Monday June 14. Brian leaves behind a wife and two young children.
Two other players also fell ill to meningitis following the game. Nick Smith, age 27, died Tuesday June 22 after being treated at Poudre Valley Hospital for several days. Nick leaves behind his wife, who is pregnant with the couple’s first child. The third player affected, Bill Jubert, was vacationing with his family in Montana when he fell ill.

Benefit Tournament
We hope to raise a significant amount of money for the families of the 3 ice hockey players who contracted meningitis. If you don’t know The Story yet, find out more in the panel to the right. This could have happened to any of us and we want to make a big difference in a tragic situation.
We are raising money in three ways:
- Benefit Ice Hockey Tournament, Friday Aug 13 – Sunday Aug 15
- Silent Auction, Friday Aug 13, 7-10 pm
- Donations
We invite you to participate in the ways that feel most appropriate to you. You may donate money directly to the cause, donate items for the silent auction, buy a ticket to attend and bid on items at the silent auction, and enter your ice hockey team to play in the tournament.
Who Benefits
The goal is to raise as much money as we can for the players’ families. In order to make your donations tax-deductible, we have partnered with the 510(c)3 organization Sierra’s Race Against Meningitis (SRAM). All the money raised will go to SRAM, who will then distribute 30% to each of the three affected families. SRAM’s goal is to help prevent others from falling ill to meningitis, and they helped the FCAHA substantially by covering the cost of preventative vaccinations for other FCAHA players who were at high risk. Accordingly, the final 10% of funds raised will stay with SRAM to help them further their mission.
